The smallest diocese in the world is at the same time the oldest Christian monastery still in existence in the world. It houses the richest collection of icons and precious manuscripts. The first references to the monastery of St. Catherine can be found in the chronicles of the Patriarch of Alexandria, Entyehios, who lived during the 9th century. Theses chronicles tell us how Helena, roman emperor Constantine’s mother, remained so impressed by the holiness of this place that in the year 330 she ordered the construction of a small chapel on the site where the burning bush had been located. The chapel was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
**** please note that the transfiguration church is currently closed due to Covid-19 but people can see it from outside and can also see the burning bush – Moses well and icon and manuscripts Gallery.
